How to Nurture Your Elite Players

Every coach has them.

You have 60 kids in your program. Most are doing great. They are buying in.

But then there are those 2 or 3.

These are the athletes who aren’t satisfied with just “being part of the team.”

They are the ones who just want more. And quite frankly, they can handle more.

  • They don’t just want to be Green
  • They want to be Elite

They have the loudest voices, the strongest influence, and the highest potential.

Their mindset is just different.

If you level them up, you level the entire program up. A rising tide lifts all boats, but these players are the ones controlling the tide.

So, what is your plan for them?

Why Level Up the Individual?

At Lead ‘Em Up, we strongly believe that leveling up the whole team is the right move. That is how you change your season and your culture. We rarely single players out because we believe leadership is a skill for everyone.

But we have heard the call from parents, coaches, and the players themselves.

There are players who are on another level. They have an appetite for leadership that exceeds the standard practice time.

There are levels to everything.

And for those players who are ready to climb higher, we needed a path.

Enter: The “Green Elite” Program

We realized that while our standard curriculum covers the team, there was a gap for the stand-out leaders of your roster.

That is why we built Green Elite.

Whether you are using the full Lead ‘Em Up curriculum or not, this program fits. It isn’t a lecture series. It is a 6-session 1-on-1 leadership mentorship. It rips open the hood of leadership and looks at the engine.

In this program, we study the attributes of the world’s bests: athletes like Kobe Bryant, Roger Federer, and others who defined their generations.

The 5 Core Attributes of a Green Elite Leader:

  1. Engaged: They are locked in, never passive
  2. Lasting: Their impact survives after they graduate
  3. Inspirational: They make others believe they can be better
  4. Tough: They are the shelter in the storm
  5. Empathetic: They see the person, not just the jersey

Hope is Not a Strategy

Most coaches hope these players figure it out. We hope they watch the right YouTube videos. We hope they emulate the right pros.

But hope isn’t a strategy.

If you want an elite leader, you need an elite plan to build them. You cannot expect a high schooler to intuitively know how to carry the weight of leadership through adversity, conflict, and pressure without a roadmap.

The ROI on 2 Players

Imagine if just two of your players fully embodied these attributes next season.

Imagine if your best player was also your most Empathetic.

Imagine if your loudest player was also your most engaged.

That changes everything. It changes your locker room. It changes your Friday nights. It protects your culture from the inside out.

Don’t leave your best players to chance. Give them a plan.

Ep. 154: Leadership That’s Aged Badly

Not all leadership development practices stand the test of time. Some ideas that once sounded effective have aged badly and may actually hold coaches and teams back today.

In this episode, we take a hard look at the leadership concepts that no longer work and the ones that still matter. From believing that one way of thinking fits every situation, to trying to lead alone without collaboration, to calling for help only when things fall apart, we unpack the three biggest mistakes that keep leaders stuck in old habits. Join us as we explore what modern leadership really requires.
