When should we start the program?

Today! Most teams in Lead ‘Em Up approach their leadership development with a year-long mindset, engaging in sessions during the season as well as the offseason. The biggest thing to consider is attendance. Start when you can best guarantee full attendance. Your players will begin adopting a unique leadership language, so when players miss it, they don’t understand the language.

How many sessions should we do in a season?

We encourage coaches to get to 12. We have found through conversations, studies, and surveys that when a team gets to 12 sessions during a calendar year (in-season and/or off-season), they see the greatest engagement, impact, and transformation.

What does a session look like?

A session is 30-50 minutes, distraction-free, intentional leadership development time. You’ll have everything you need through our various drills, activities and teaching concepts, to fill this space and have it be as impactful as possible.

Can I see a sample exercise?

Sure! Here is one of our Relationship exercises, “Going for the Gold”, just to give you a glimpse into our style and approach.

Can this be done with a leadership council or just teams?

This can work for both a leadership council or a team. We focus on “people-building” rather than “team-building”, so whether in a leadership council or a team, growing people is the focus. With that said, we always recommend that everyone on the team engages in leadership development and team performance training as it will produce the best results and most increase in performance and team culture.

Should it be with the whole program or just varsity?

That is up to you! Some use it with their whole program, while others reserve it strictly for varsity. There are pros and cons to both.

Pros: Everyone experiences it, and you start developing leaders early.

Cons: The larger the group, the more distraction, it may reduce players willingness to participate, both teams won’t be going through and experiencing the same things so its tougher to personalize the session.

Is there a specific order of exercises we should follow?

Yes! We provide a detailed yearly track that suggests the optimal order of exercises for developing leaders and building your culture in the most effective and impactful way. You can follow this track as a guide for your sessions, but you also have the flexibility to adjust it based on your needs by rearranging exercise themes as you see fit.

Can we repeat the exercises?

Absolutely! And it is a good Idea to do so. Here are two reasons why:

  1. Your players often WANT to do some exercises more than once
  2.  We believe the concepts need to be instilled in our players, and often, that requires going through it more than once. Think about reading a book, sometimes, you get more from the book during the second read, and you often get things you missed the first time.
Who should take/complete the Captains Course?

The Captains Course is for the Captains/Leaders to complete together, on their own. At two points during the 8-part program (at the halfway point and conclusion) the Captains/Leaders will check in with the coach to provide updates.

What does the Green Verification program look like?

Once you’ve taught the Green Team and established your team’s Green Standards, every 2-4 weeks during the season, allow the players to vote who they feel is best living out what it means to be green, and verify those players green.

If you have a roster of 20 people, verify 3-4 people at a time as you balance celebrating players while also enticing the remainder of the players to be more green.

After year one, what does year two look like?

Once you renew for year two, you will unlock your year two track. Each yearly track has a brand new theme and a new exercise to launch the theme. The theme builds on the previous year and is accompanied with new stickers and poster prints to help bring the theme to life. The theme overarches the whole year as you follow the new teaching track with many new teachings along with reinforcement of our core foundations.

What separates Lead ‘Em Up from other leadership programs?

It’s our curriculum. We have built the curriculum in a way that gets young people viewing leadership development as something they “get to do” and not “have to do.” We’ve been able to accomplish this by using our M-P-S filter.

Everything we teach goes through this filer: is it M-Memorable, P-Portable, and S-Sticky. Read more about our MPS filter here.

Should I consider bringing Lead ‘Em Up to do a training with my team?

If you have the budget, you should 100% consider a Lead ‘Em Up live training for your team. Here is why:

  1. A live training will communicate to your team that you’re fully invested in Lead ‘Em Up and that we’re a true partner in the building process
  2. You will get to see a Lead ‘Em Up coach facilitate the training, which will help you teach your sessions moving forward
  3. Your players will get to hear an alternate voice share similar themes, which often land differently with your team
  4. They will get BETTER from the training. It will transform your team.
